They destroyed the memorials and prevented citizens from grieving publicly. That escalated into protests and then the massive police overreaction further escalated it. At that point activists started trying to turn it into a national story.

The parasite metaphor grabs, and the departure from metaphor solidifies the pure irrationality of the whole cycle. I wonder whether we have enough perspective yet (or perhaps ever?) to see how this Internet concentration of rage ranks with respect to older incarnations – yellow journalism, verbal gossip, propaganda from sagas to pamphlets, and so on.
I do, though, find it ironic that this article is under the same “things-i-will-regret-writing” tag as the Scott Aaronson and outgroup articles because I perceive that the outrage I feel strongly underpinning and peeping out through those articles are exactly driven by the processes described in this article – extreme elements have offended S.Alexander and he is responding strongly to those. Thus, unfortunately, ignoring counting or even hitting by collateral the quieter, more moderate centrists discussions. Thus, feeding into the cycle.

Do you mind explaining to me why you believe that animal welfare is an actively harmful cause? (I started eating only humanely raised meat about 6 months ago for ethical reasons, but I really enjoy meat and dairy and find this inconvenient, so I’m actively in the market for compelling arguments against my position! It kind of sounds like I’m trolling here, but I’m not.)

So why don’t the illegals just wait in line?

Because they will never get in that way.

Look, I’m against illegal immigration, too, but policy debates should not be one-sided. Let’s not pretend there is a nice, legal immigration process that millions of people are side-stepping because they are too impatient to wait in line like everybody else. There isn’t.

When you eat cheap meat for dinner, you should be fully aware that the animal you are swallowing lived a horrible life in an overcrowded cage where it never got to see the light of day. When you advocate against illegal immigration, you should do it in the full knowledge that most of those people will never be able to legally enter the country, and that they will almost certainly have a worse quality of life as a result. Anything else is intellectual cowardice.
