I'd have to agree with the assesment on the Italian bloc. The recent 'Vatileaks' controversy has nearly assured that Bertone will not be a contender, and the apparent fractionalization seems to have discouraged a return to an Italian Papacy.

Really, there doesn't seem to be any obvious front runner... though Cardinal Turkson might be the leader. Perhaps we might end up with an Eastern Rite or Asian Pope?

I know only slightly more about British honors than German ones.
"And it seems sort of like a form of cultural imperialism to demand the head of a religion I don’t believe should parrot my views and ignore the views of his religion’s actual members."

Well, err, AIUI if the Pope matched the views of his religion's actual members then he'd be considerably more liberal. Certainly from a Western European or American (North and South) perspective. Lots of use of birth control and abortion and support for gay marriage among Catholics...

Bishops of the Church of England really should be commended for the positive example they set. Their commitment to the ideal of healing this schism is only matched by their tireless work towards the goal. Minimizing and hopefully eventually eliminating such obsolete and archaic theological concepts as "Jesus" and "God" in favor of updated ones such as "Diversity","Human Rights" and "The Environment".

Not to say the Anglican Church doesn't have problems. For example one of their most recent reform attempts allowed actual democracy... eh... I mean populist pandering to the laity to get in the way.

Who do those mere *believers* who go to Church think they are to embarrass the great Bishops in this way? How are the latter supposed to socialize now with the upper and middle class with this terrible scarlet letter S embroidered on their vestments? Don't they care about the seats in the House of Lords? And even more importantly what the BBC or The Guardian shall say? Where do they think they live, in a kingdom not of this world!?? Do they now serve Mammon?

But to keep this in perspective the Papacy in New York has very similar problems and so should not cast any stones.

Of course, there is good reason for a a progressive to prefer a progressive Pope even while respecting the institution (though not its ideas). A sufficiently progressive Pope would heal the schism between the papacy in Rome and the papacy in New York, and wouldn't that be a beautiful thing?
